Your Pillow Matters More Than You Think
Most people spend more time choosing a new phone case than they do choosing a pillow - even though a pillow directly affects the quality of every single night's sleep. The right pillow keeps your head, neck, and spine in proper alignment, reducing pain, tension, and the restless repositioning that fragments your sleep. The wrong pillow does the opposite, and many people do not realise their pillow is the problem until they finally switch to one that actually suits them.
Match Your Pillow to Your Sleep Position
Side Sleepers
Side sleeping is the most common position in Australia, and it requires the thickest, firmest pillow. The gap between your ear and the mattress is significant, and your pillow needs to fill that space completely to keep your neck and spine in a straight line. A pillow that is too thin allows your head to tilt downward, straining the neck. Memory foam contour pillows work particularly well for side sleepers because they support the natural curve of the neck while filling the gap between the head and shoulder.
Back Sleepers
Back sleepers need a medium-loft pillow that supports the natural curve of the cervical spine without pushing the head too far forward. A pillow that is too thick angles the head forward and strains the neck. A contoured pillow with a slight cradle in the centre and raised edges works well, keeping the head cradled while supporting the neck.
Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleeping is the most challenging position for pillow selection because almost any pillow pushes the head upward and twists the neck. If you sleep on your stomach, you need the thinnest, softest pillow available - or no pillow at all. Some stomach sleepers do well with a very flat, soft down or microfibre pillow that provides minimal lift.
Pillow Fill Types
Memory Foam
Memory foam moulds to the shape of your head and neck, providing personalised support. It is excellent for people with neck pain or those who need consistent alignment support. The trade-off is heat retention - traditional memory foam sleeps warm, so look for gel-infused or ventilated versions if temperature is a concern.
Down and Feather
Down pillows are soft, luxurious, and highly adjustable - you can fluff and shape them to suit your position. They tend to sleep cooler than foam but offer less structured support, which means they may not hold their loft through the night. They are a good choice for people who prefer a softer, more traditional pillow feel.
Latex
Latex pillows are naturally bouncy, supportive, and breathable. They hold their shape well, resist dust mites and mould, and tend to last longer than other fills. They offer a good middle ground between the structured support of memory foam and the softer feel of down.
When to Replace Your Pillow
Most pillows should be replaced every one to two years. Over time, they lose their loft, accumulate dust mites, skin cells, and moisture, and stop providing the support they were designed for. A simple test: fold your pillow in half. If it stays folded and does not spring back, it has lost its support and needs replacing.
If you are waking up with neck pain, headaches, or stiffness that eases as the day goes on, your pillow is almost certainly part of the problem.
Protecting Your Pillow Investment
A quality pillow protector extends the life of your pillow by shielding it from sweat, oils, and dust mites. Wash your pillow protector every two weeks and your pillow itself (if machine washable) every three to four months. Using a silk pillowcase reduces friction on your skin and hair while also adding a layer of protection to the pillow itself.

"I had been using the same flat, lumpy pillow for four years and just accepted the morning neck pain as normal. Switched to a contoured memory foam pillow and the pain was gone within three nights. I cannot believe I waited so long for such a simple fix."

"As a side sleeper, I never realised how important pillow height was until I got a proper firm pillow for side sleeping. No more waking up with a stiff neck. It is one of those things that seems small but makes an enormous difference."
